Her maternal grandmother spoke Oneida language fluently as her first language. Her maternal grandfather's parents and siblings spoke Menominee. Her father, paternal grandfather and grandmother were all members of the Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohicans and worked passionately to revitalize their culture.
